Compensation: $55,000 - $65.000 Annually Location: On-Site

Summary: Rhode Island PBS seeks a seasoned video journalist and writer to spearhead weekly show production and contribute to special programming projects within the department while collaborating with colleagues. This role also includes producing and writing content for our premier weekly news magazine program, Rhode Island PBS Weekly, and social and digital content.

We are searching for a confident and proactive journalist who can meet tight deadlines and deliver high-quality work. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional interviewing, storytelling, and writing skills. A strong commitment to journalistic integrity and accuracy is essential. Additionally, the successful candidate should be dedicated to local community storytelling, and capable of crafting compelling and well-balanced pieces across various platforms.

Basic Function:

  • Collaborate with colleagues to generate and pitch solid story ideas
  • Book guests, conduct pre-interviews, and work with on-air talent to line up guests and conduct interviews
  • Oversee studio tapings and the post-production process.
  • Research, report, and write short and long-form stories for various projects and programs including Rhode Island PBS Weekly. Draft digital stories. Collaborate with the Audience Engagement team on the creation of social assets and distribution of stories across platforms.

Job Responsibilities and Specific Duties (including but not limited to):

  • Produces community-driven segments/stories and panels for such as Generation Rising.
  • Books, pre-interviews, and writes backgrounders/questions for information and questions for the host.
  • Oversees the studio tapings, post-production process, and works with the Audience Engagement team and colleagues to drive audience engagement.
  • Reports on important Rhode Island and Southern New England stories.
  • Research, report, and draft stories for Rhode Island PBS Weekly and other projects and programs as assigned across all platforms.
  • Works collaboratively with senior staff, talent, photographers, and editors.
  • Writes scripts independently.
  • Produces social assets for shows assigned.
  • Writes Web articles for segments and other produced projects.
  • Develops a network of credible sources in the community and beyond.

Education / Experience / Qualifications:

  • Strong news judgment and journalistic integrity
  • Demonstrated experience of successfully completing projects on time
  • Excellent writer
  • Strong Interviewer
  • Must be a team player and willing to collaborate
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Broadcasting, Communications, or related field OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Line producing experience
  • Booking producing experience
  • Long-form storytelling experience
  • Ability to edit on Adobe Premiere
